Branch Brook Park was chosen as a site for our environmental justice initiatives due to its historical significance, environmental importance, and its role as a community gathering place. As one of the oldest and largest public parks in Newark, New Jersey, Branch Brook Park has been cherished by generations of residents for its beautiful landscapes and recreational opportunities. However, like many urban green spaces, the park has faced environmental challenges, including litter accumulation and pollution, which disproportionately impact nearby underserved communities. By conducting service events and clean-up activities in Branch Brook Park, we aimed to not only restore its natural beauty but also address environmental injustices faced by nearby residents. Additionally, the park's central location and accessibility made it an ideal space to engage diverse volunteers from the community, promoting a shared sense of ownership and responsibility for the environment. Through our efforts in Branch Brook Park, we sought to create a positive impact, fostering a deeper connection between the community and this beloved park while advocating for environmental justice and sustainability for all Newark residents.

As a historic urban oasis along the Brandywine River, the park holds cultural and recreational value for residents, making it a symbol of the city's natural heritage. However, over the years, Brandywine Park has faced environmental degradation and litter accumulation, impacting the quality of the park experience and the health of nearby communities.
